Shocking Incident at Paris Olympics: Cyclist Stops Mid-Race to Visit a Pub
Over the weekend, German cyclist Nils Politt caused a major surprise when he had to temporarily halt his men’s road race at the Paris Olympics to “relieve himself” at a local pub.
Politt, 30, was forced to stop at Cafe des 2 Moulins – a famous spot featured in the 2001 film Amelie – to use the restroom mid-race. A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, capturing Politt rejoining the race after his “pit stop” at the pub.
The German cyclist initially was among the leading group but fell behind when the top racers accelerated. Politt, who won a stage of the Tour de France in 2021, finished the race in 70th place, 20 minutes behind champion Remco Evenepoel.
On the course, Belgian star Remco Evenepoel surged ahead with 40 km remaining, maintaining his speed and overtaking each competitor in the leading pack. Evenepoel left French rider Valentin Madouas behind, racing solo to the finish line in Paris.
The German rider received enthusiastic support from the crowd as he exited the pub and continued the race.
Evenepoel had previously won a gold medal in the time trial event and appeared to be coasting to the finish line when disaster struck. In the final 4 km, he suffered a flat tire on the cobblestone section. However, he handled the situation calmly, changed his bike, and secured a historic victory under the Eiffel Tower.
The Belgian star, who once played for the national U15 and U16 football teams, completed a double gold medal triumph at the Paris Olympics. He also finished third overall in the 2024 Tour de France. From football to cycling, Evenepoel, 24, is a rare gem in the world of sports.
