Tumaren, a once-orphaned elephant who captured hearts in her journey back to the wild, has now joyfully welcomed her calf, Tembo, into the world.
This heartwarming tale of resilience and motherhood unfolded at the Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East National Park.
Tembo’s arrival on October 24, 2023, took everyone by surprise, with Tumaren proudly parading her newborn son before the keepers who had cared for her.
Named Tembo, meaning ‘elephant’ in Swahili, the calf boasts good health and a charming round shape, much to the delight of the Ithumba team.
Tumaren’s own story is one of courage and survival. Rescued in 2009 after losing her mother tragically, she found solace and care at the nursery before transitioning to the reintegration unit.
