DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine are in trade rumors with the Chicago Bulls, and the Miami Heat have been frequently mentioned. Specifically, the Heat have been labeled as a preferred trade destination by LaVine.

However, what about DeRozan? Miami was involved in a recent update about the Bulls star’s status in Chicago.

The Bulls could be going into a full-blown rebuild sooner rather than later if things don’t turn around in Chicago. If so, LaVine and DeRozan need to have a destination in mind, with the latter now having his list reported.

According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the Heat and New York Knicks are known to be preferable to DeRozan if he were to be moved by the Bulls near the 2024 NBA trade deadline. That is growing more likely as Chicago sits 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 7-14 record.

Through 19 games, DeRozan is averaging 21.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.9 assists while shooting 45.6% from the field and 37.5% from the three-point line. The Chicago forward’s field goal percentage would be the lowest since the 2017-’18 NBA season.

On the other side of the spectrum, DeRozan has never been this efficient from beyond the arc, which brings us to this question. Should the Heat seriously pursue DeRozan if Chicago shops him during the trade deadline?

Why the Heat should pass on trading for DeRozan

DeRozan could be brought to Miami with Kyle Lowry or Duncan Robinson as the major salary piece in a potential deal. At the end of the day, DeRozan likely wants to join Lowry in Miami, as he is one of his close friends.

However, the Heat should move in a different direction. Acquiring DeRozan would mean that Miami needs to sacrifice shooting with Robinson leaving. Also, Caleb Martin and a piece like Nikola Jovic must go with Robinson.

Quite frankly, the Heat should aim for bigger fish. The emergence of Jaime Jaquez Jr. as a sensational rookie will help Miami when it is fully healthy. To this point, the Heat only have an 11-9 record due to the health of several key players.

Once Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, and several other contributors are fully healthy, DeRozan is unnecessary. He is still a good basketball player at 34 years old, but the fit would be questionable as the organization would give up three-point shooting.

For now, the Heat should focus on keeping flexibility for a better fit to enter the trade market. Miami doesn’t need to swing a deal out of desperation, and this would be the perfect example unless the team needs a complete reset in February.
