After the first half of the season not being used by coach Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea , young defender Ian Maatsen decided to leave Stamford Bridge in the winter transfer window. The Dutch player came to Borussia Dortmund on loan for a period of 6 months.
However, in a recent interview, the young star still on Chelsea’s payroll admitted that he wanted to stay at Borussia Dortmund after the loan contract ended. He said (recorded by 90min): “ I feel like I’ve been playing with these players for many years. I keep all options open. I want to stay . Why not? We wait to see what the future holds .”
The 21-year-old player has just agreed to an extension with Chelsea until 2026 before being sent out on loan, but the contract release clause worth 35 million pounds will take effect this summer.
It remains to be seen whether the Bundesliga representative will activate this clause or not, but it is clear that Ian Maatsen wants to stay at Signal Iduna Park to develop his career instead of competing with Chelsea’s star-studded squad.
