Simone Biles is once again taking aim at her critics, this time defending her decision to allow her husband, Jonathan Owens, to wear one of her newly won Olympic gold medals.
The 27-year-old Olympic champion gymnast faced criticism after Owens shared a photo of himself wearing the gold medal that Biles and Team USA won at the Paris Olympics.
“Witnessing history every time you step on the mat,” Owens captioned.
“Congrats baby on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!!!! Just wow!!!! 8 of them!!!!! So thankful I was there to see it.”
Some TikTok users were against the gesture
While many fans saw the post as a supportive gesture, some critics took issue with Owens wearing the medal, accusing him of posing as if it were his own achievement.
One TikTok user, Kiera Breaugh, went viral with a video telling Owens to “take her medal off,” which amassed 2.1 million views.
Biles wasn’t pleased with the criticism. Responding to Breaugh‘s comments, she clarified that Owens wasn’t the only one to wear her medal.
“Crazy thing is, I put my medal on every single one of my family members and took pictures,” Biles declared.
“So don’t ever make assumptions. Like y’all are so fu*king miserable. Leave us alone.”
Breaugh later responded in a follow-up TikTok video after hearing of Biles‘ own comments.
“I’m honored to be told to fu*k off by such a talented woman,” she joked. “She put the medal on him. I can’t really be mad if she told him to [wear it].”
Owens, 29, and Biles tied the knot on April 22, 2023, at the Harris County Courthouse in Houston, followed by a second wedding celebration in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Throughout Biles‘ competitions at the Paris Games, Owens, who plays as a safety for the Chicago Bears, has been a constant presence in the stands, cheering her on and wearing various T-shirts in tribute to his wife.
