Taylor Swift is facing backlash from her fans after being seen warmly embracing Brittany Mahomes, who was recently praised by Donald Trump for “strongly defending” him amid online controversy.
The global superstar and Mahomes, wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, were seated together at the US Open Men’s Final on Sunday, along with Patrick and Swift’s boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
After photos of Swift hugging Mahomes surfaced on social media, fans expressed outrage, criticizing the singer for getting close to the 29-year-old, who is perceived by some as a Trump supporter.
One fan tweeted, “Taylor, girl, that’s not very Miss Americana of you. How can you be around someone like that?” The comment referenced Swift’s 2020 Miss Americana documentary.
The film’s title comes from her 2019 song Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince, which protested the political climate during Trump’s first presidency.
Another penned: “It’s low-key so humiliating to make a whole documentary about wanting to be more politically active/outspoken and then not making yourself a super politically active public figure”.
“Us level-headed Swifties are just as confused as you,” a third commented.
However, other fans defended the Grammy winner, publicly backed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris during the 2020 presidential election, writing that “it’s OK if your friends vote for someone other than your preferred candidate.”
“So people can’t rise above politics as friends? Why not?” one asked.
Another penned: “Just FYI – you can be friends with people who have different opinions, political views and lifestyle choices than you. It’s called being a grown adult.”
Last week, Trump thanked Mahomes for “defending” him online amid controversy surrounding her apparent support for his 2024 presidential election campaign.
“I want to thank beautiful Brittany Mahomes for so strongly defending me, and the fact that MAGA is the greatest and most powerful Political Movement in the History of our now Failing Country,” Trump posted from his Truth Social account.
“With Crime and Illegal Immigration totally out of control, INFLATION Ravaging all Americans, and a World that is laughing at the stupidity of our hapless ‘leaders,’ it is nice to see someone who loves our Country, and wants to save it from DOOM,” he added. “What a great couple – See you both at the Super Bowl!”
The former president’s post was a reaction to the uproar Mahomes caused on social media in late August after she “liked” a post from Trump titled “The 2024 GOP Platform,” outlining his second-term priorities.
Although Mahomes later removed her like following the backlash, she went on to like comments on posts supporting a “Trump-Vance 2024” ticket.
