Two triathletes who swam in the Seine last week fell ill, one of them with E.coli, the Telegraph reported. Claire Michel was hospitalized on Wednesday, prompting the Belgian team to withdraw from the competition because they could not find a replacement, while Adrien Briffod of Switzerland contracted a gastrointestinal infection.
At the Paris Olympics, the Triahlon event will feature three events: men’s individual, women’s individual (on July 31) and mixed relay (on August 5). Athletes will have to complete three events, including a 1,500m swim in the Seine, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run, with the total parameters used to rank them.
The rains have added to concerns that the Seine will continue to be polluted. “We have decided to cancel the familiarisation session, we are looking forward to an improvement in the coming hours,” said Anne Descamps, spokeswoman for the Paris Olympics. “We hope that the race will go ahead as planned and the weather will improve.” Meanwhile , Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach proudly called it Seinesational .
In the two individual triathlon events, winners Alex Yee (male, UK) and Cassandre Beaugrand (female, France) both reported no problems after swimming 1,500m in the Seine. However, Canadian athlete Tyler Mislawchuk vomited immediately after crossing the finish line.
In addition to the 3 swimming events of the Triathlon, the Seine River is also the venue for the women’s (August 8) and men’s (August 9) individual marathon swimming events, with a total distance of 10km.
