“The Ultimate Heavy-Duty Machine: Letourneau L-2350 – The World’s Biggest Wheel Loader”
When it comes to heavy machinery, the Letourneau L-2350 is truly a marvel of engineering. This massive wheel loader is two stories tall, can lift the weight of 40 cars over its head, and weighs more than a Boeing 737. The Letourneau company, based in Longview, Texas, builds these giants to load coal, gold, copper ore, and other minerals into equally giant trucks. The L-2350 has a whopping 53 cubic yard rock bucket, which is equivalent to about five normal dump trucks you might see on the road. Its total hoist capacity is 80 tons, making it an ideal choice for heavy-duty mining operations.
What’s fascinating is that wheel loaders are relatively young in the excavator family. In the 1920s, several implement manufacturers began building scoop attachments that fitted to the front of farm tractors. It wasn’t until after World War II that manufacturers began making special purpose loaders, and since then, they’ve grown to become a crucial part of the mining and construction industries.
The L-2350 is the first of its kind to roll off the assembly line at Letourneau, and it’s been in high demand ever since. Engineers worked for two years to design this machine, with the goal of building a machine capable of lifting 50% more than its predecessor. The dilemma they faced was the size of the tires – there simply wasn’t a tire big enough. So, they partnered with the engineers at Firestone to develop the world’s largest tire, which stands at 13 feet tall and is over five feet wide.
Letourneau builds many of the parts for the L-2350 at their Longview plant, even operating a steel mill. The machine’s 16-cylinder diesel engine produces about 2,300 horsepower and consumes fuel at a rate of about 50 gallons per hour when in operation. Massive 16-inch hydraulic cylinders lift the big bucket, making it possible to dig an Olympic-sized swimming pool in just a few scoops.
